Local celebrations and feast days:
Carnival is still celebrated on the island in the old traditional way, and is one of the best known in Greece. The cavalieri and their dames dance the lively carnival dances in the squares and along the streets.

On Clean Monday – “Kathara Deftera” – , everyone rushes to the countryside to celebrate the koulouma, to picnic in the open, to dance the quadrilles and the Kefalonian Ballos to the sounds of the local bands. Easter follows the traditional Greek Orthodox tradition and customs, with church services, feasting and dancing. On Easter Monday the icon of Sissia Monastery is carried in procession through the villages.

On the 21st May, the Union of the Ionian Islands with Greece is commemorated with parades. Throughout August Argostoli welcomes choral ensembles from all over the world for its International Choral Festival.

On the 15th of August, the feast day of the Dormition of the Virgin is celebrated at Markopoulo village. On the 16th of August the procession of St. Gerasimos- the patron saint of the island- takes place at Omala, Argostoli and Skala.
